I would have to say a little bit of both to be honest. Well i have used depends diapers, they are fairly absorbant, but the naturally thinner diapers like them cannot retain as much as a 'thicker' diaper when fully wet. I wear for need, but i prefer a diaper with moderate thickness, it gives me the security that they will last multiple wettings as i cannot properly change myself when out and about. So in my opinion: Absorbancy is a good thing but a diaper has to have some amount of thickness.

I go for absorbency . But , fit and comfort is important too and without a good fit even a good absorbant diaper might leak. So my vote is absorbency and fit.

As a producer of adult diaper I can give u a more technical answer... a certain thickness is needed for good absorbency. Its not so much the storage of fluid, its about the distribution of them within the product. For incontinent people these is not so much a issue as for DL's. Since DL's urinate bigger quantities over shorter amount of time, hence the spreading and holding fluid is much more important then the actual storage (capacity).

So I good and save diaper should not only have a certain capacity, but also thickness.

I really have to go for absorbent. Isn't that the reason we are in diapers, not to leak, and not to wet outside our diapers.

The question was thickness vs absorbency, but there are some other important factors. Specifically, the thinner high absorbency diapers often rely more on gel. This means that they become thick when wet, and if taped too tightly, this can lead to "mis-directing" the urine around the side where it can leak. If you move around a lot, some people find that the gel doesn't stay in place, breaking up and collecting in the bottom. Gel also doesn't wick the wetness to the back of the diaper, and if you are standing when you wet, then sit down, it can squeeze out and leak behind the legs. Tena Overnights (last I used them) were a good example of this. The thickness of a thicker diaper often comes from the use of more pulp in addition to gel. The pulp is better at wicking and therefore lets you take advantage of more of the diaper's absorbent potential. It tends to hold the gel in place better and while it starts thick, it doesn't tend to get significantly thicker than that. Molicare Super Plus is a good example of this.

I seem to see more people interested in the thicker diapers, but that doesn't mean they are more absorbent, just because they are thicker. It's the gel in the material that retains the liquids.
